Happiness is a choice, choose it

There are people who would look up at their burning house and as they held their kids close exhale, “we made it out alright.”There are also people who would have their hands cupped over their mouths thinking not of what they’ve saved but of what they’ve lost. ¶ What is the true difference between these two people? ¶ They’ve both lost just as much, yet they both feel an entirely different emotion. ¶ The difference is that the first person has chosen happiness — rather than despair — despite all they lost. ¶ You see, happiness doesn’t just happen to you.

5 tools that will make you no better at your job unless you actually use them

Stop buying shit and start doing shitI’ve fallen victim to this time and time again, and it really really sucks. ¶ You buy a product because you think it will make you more productive, or proficient, or get better data than the last, then instead of using it to its fullest potential, and adapting it when it isn’t exactly perfect — you jump ship to another tool thinking it will solve all of your problems. ¶ Yes, a nail gun is more effective in most cases than a hammer — but not if you don’t show up to work because you’re at Home…

The key to riding a wave is reducing friction

It’s no different in business than it is in the waterYou’ll know very quickly if you try to ride a wave which is more efficient — throwing your body into the wave, or riding a fiberglass board. ¶ In business, you will experience waves of success and droughts you must trudge through. There’s no doubt — the frequency of each will be dependent on many different variables some out of your control, but how you handle each is very much within your control.

Why don’t you smile when you run?

If you love something, let people see itA good friend once told me the reason he never started running is because he has never seen one person running who looked happy. “They all look miserable, so why would I ever want to get into that?” ¶ I love to run, I run a good bit — if not while playing sports (as I prefer) than just straight up running a few miles at a time or even running a half marathon or 1/3rd of an adventure race (basically a triathlon but with points you have to discover — hidden in the wilderness — with a map and a…

I like to think that I’m intelligent, but how do I really know?

I like to think that I’m intelligent, but how do I really know?

If you think about it’s really impossible to know if you are intelligent. One of the main reasons is because of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Shut the hell up, your life is great

I audibly said to myself as I was repulsed by what I was thinkingI just caught myself complaining about traffic as I head out to Siesta Key on a beautiful sunny day in this paradise I live in at 1:30pm on a Tuesday headed to get coffee and lunch at my favorite coffee shop in my luxury sports car — comfortably enjoying my air conditioning set to 60 degrees while listening to my favorite songs through my Harman/Kardon sound system — as I slowly passed by homeless person sitting in his wheelchair smiling as he looked out at the ocean.

Broken Heart Days

Some days everything just gets to you. It’s not so much that day, maybe, it could be we’re just more vulnerable on certain days to…everything going on everyday. ¶ Maybe it’s the first story I saw today, about taxi drivers in Japan picking up ghosts in their cabs in the area where the 2011 Tsunami killed 16,000 people. ¶ One of them asked the driver if they were dead, and when the driver turned around, they were gone. ¶ Then there was the thirteen year old girl murdered by two Virginia Tech students, just for the hell of it.

Dear beautiful readers of Coffee Time

I appreciate you following this publication that I’ve been so lucky to cultivate on Medium for all of the past few years. It’s really been an avenue of expression that changed my life in many ways. ¶ While I’m still going to be writing on Coffee Time with longer posts every once in a while, and accepting inquiries for fantastic pieces of writing that jive with the style of Coffee Time (if you want to submit something, tweet me @snsmth) I am also creating an entirely new publication. ¶ The new publication will essentially be a daily blog about my entrepreneurial journey as I grow and build SimpleTiger and any…

If this doesn’t inspire you to make a change in our environment, what will?

It’s really not that complicated. People have overcomplicated the problem or obfuscated the problem of climate change to create inaction to…further their own ends, but it will literally be our end if we don’t change and adapt to what is best for the planet, for wildlife, and thus for us. ¶ We are the shepherds of this world, and too long we have strayed from our flock.

“Someone make a play!”

There’s nothing that feels better than when someone on your team pulls off a heroic chain of events that you couldn’t have ever anticipated…and comes out with a huge win in your favor. ¶ It’s O’dell Beckham snagging that backward leaping one-handed catch. It’s a teammate in an Esports match fragging the entire other team in a clutch situation to win the round. It’s someone who isn’t designated to sales closing a new lead for your company that puts them way in the black. ¶ I don’t want the rung of the mill colleague working with me ever.

The Difference Between Settling At Your Plateaus And Achieving Your Dreams

Will you act, or will you stay still?: ¶ [Working harder.] ¶ You’ll probably leave now. If not, you have a chance. ¶ I’ll be the first to admit, I’m horrible at this. I try to “work smart, not hard” whenever I can, but that in itself is an excuse. “Work smart” doesn’t make sense. Everyone is working as smart as they can, the outliers are the ones who work hard. ¶ If you can “work smart” then you have no excuse not to also work hard.

My First Two Film Roles Shot In Different Cities On The Same Day

First film roles for an actor are like first loves and losing your virginity, especially when legendary directors are involved. And there’s…no director I’d been more in awe of or wanted to work with as much as Sydney Pollack, the Oscar winning director of Jeremiah Johnson, The Way We Were, Tootsie, Three Days of the Condor, and Out of Africa. ¶ I’d picked up a new agent in Nashville who’d arranged for me to audition for The Firm Sydney Pollack was directing in Memphis, the Tom Cruise movie based on the best selling John Grisham novel.
